Description
Striking black and white fine art photograph of the Schepis Museum, which is located along the bank of the Ouachita River in Columbia, Louisiana.
The Schepis building was built in 1916 and has been the home of the Schepis Museum since 1993. and is the backdrop for the charming town of Columbia, which nestles along the banks of the Ouachita River.
The building was designed and built by John Schepis. John, an architect and his wife, Rosa, a Grand Opera singer, both emigrated from Sicily around the turn of the century and landed in the bustling steamboat settlement known as Columbia. The building is specifically Italian, resembling Renaissance-style palazzo of the mid-fifteenth century. The top of the Schepis building is adorned with two life-size statues of George Washington and Christopher Columbus. An American eagle flies above them, and an Italian coat of arms is placed in the center.
