Artist's Description
Detail shot of intracate beads and designs adorning the suit of a member of the Cha Wa Mardi Gras Indian band. “Cha Wa” is a slang phrase used by every Mardi Gras Indian tribe meaning “We’re comin’ for ya”. Some trace the origin of the Mardi Gras Indians back to the 1700s, when official records noted the presence of Africans in the Crescent City in Native American attire. Native Americans later helped escaped slaves by hiding them in their settlements in the days of bondage. Present day Mardi Gras Indians sew gorgeous beaded suits featuring huge, bright-feathered headdresses known as crowns and assemble on Mardi Gras Day and march through the streets singing, chanting, and playing various percussive instruments.
About Eugene Campbell
I am a Louisiana-based photographer working hard to make a name in the photography world, as someone who creates great images- whether they be thought-provoking or whimsical. This whimsy or eccentricity allows me to be free when shooting, never placing myself in a particular box. If something/someone catches my eye, I try to capture that moment. If an idea hits me I try to put to "film" what my brain imagined. Flickr & Instagram: hacksawgeneduggan Photo·gene·ic Photography & Fine Art photogeneic.com
